If you fly to Cozumel (CZM) instead of Cancun, you can avoid the bus / shuttle ride to Playa del Carmen and the ferry ride to Cozumel. Thanks to Tara, we have directions for getting from the airport to the hotel:
Cozumel has a very strong taxi union in so hotel shuttles are not allowed at the airport but the good news is that the taxi rides are super easy and relatively cheap.
Once you land in Cozumel you will be moved through their customs and declarations. The airport is little, and the women’s public restroom only seats 3 so plan accordingly. Just sayin’… After your bag has been X-ray’d, you’ll press a green button, and then you’ll exit customs. As you exit, you will pass through automatic sliding glass doors into the general public area of the airport where noisy vendors are waiting to sell you timeshares. When you’ve exited the sliding glass doors, make an immediate right and walk towards the end of the room that is lined with vendor booths. The last vendor booth on the left hand side is for the taxi shuttles. The ride to the hotel will cost $15 to $20. I would recommend bringing and paying with small US bills or pesos if you already have some. Most places take USD and Visa/Mastercard but most of the taxis do not accept plastic. Once you purchase your ticket, walk outside to your waiting taxi shuttle and they will take you to the hotel.
